Review
"The content of Advanced Organic Chemistry is technically sound, the mechanistic details are accurate, and the material is current. The author has a very fluid writing style that is easy to read and is never boring. I would recommend this book to any instructors who teach advanced organic chemistry, physical organic chemistry, or organic synthesis."--Ihsan Erden, San Francisco State University"Advanced Organic Chemistry is unique and without equal. Its modern focus and general coverage of all key areas of organic chemistry are amazing. This book could be of great use in an introductory graduate course like the one I teach, and also in advanced undergraduate courses in organic chemistry."--Scott Handy, Middle Tennessee State University

Often the most difficult part of a course of study is to find a structure in which to pursue it. Most books entitled “Advanced Organic Chemistry†are encyclopedic volumes which tend to emphasize certain aspects of the subject, such as physical organic chemistry or organic synthesis. These books can also be very intimidating to the student, especially one who is doing a self-study.This new book is perfect for overcoming these obstacles. While it is over 1100 pages in length, it is so well organized that the totality of organic chemistry can be approached at an advanced level. There is a good balance between physical organic and synthetic aspects of the subject. The chapters build in an orderly fashion, with plenty of problems to test the student’s competence. The writing style is very smooth, and it is a joy to read. The only area for improvement that I can see for future editions is the judicious use of color in some of the drawings. Currently the book is in black and white. A little color would be helpful in places.Overall, this is a superb book, well suited for both classroom use and self-study. Anyone entering graduate school, as well as those already in a degree program, would be wise to acquire a copy. It should also be on the bookshelf of every practicing organic chemist.
This book is EXTREMELY well-organized (and well-written). There are tons of descriptive diagrams and pictures included for important review topics as well as new material. I particularly appreciate that the answers for practice problems are worked out and included right in the chapter for easy reference. This is a wonderful reference guide for advanced chemistry students or light reading for nerds like me.
Needed for class, not very useful, cheap though.
No solutions manual to check the answers. Waste of time. I called the publisher, and they will NOT give you a solution manual. Author was very abusive to my friend and me when we asked to buy the manual. My school junked the book.
Edit: This deserves 4.5 stars, but I rounded up. There are just too many errors in equations and ChemDraw figures to justify a perfect score. The treatment of transition state theory is also lacking. It's a valiant effort, and I hope the author, who should be congratulated for this one-of-a-kind text, makes corrections in the next printing/edition. I also hope that the author makes a better index for an upcoming addition. A couple of times, I thought a topic was not included, only to realize that it was indexed as a subheading of a bigger topic.I was sent a copy of this book to review as a potential textbook for my graduate organic chemistry class. I think this textbook is the most balanced among the choices available for students of organic chemistry beyond the first year. Carey and Sundberg, in particular, is the only other text with comparable coverage, but it is two fat volumes, and the coverage of physical organic chemistry and chemical theory is somewhat uneven and dated, not to mention full of typos. There are a couple of intermediate-level textbooks that don't quite deliver the amount of info that grad students are expected to know. Thus, this text is quite unique.Lewis's text provides information on the theory of chemical bonds (incl. orbitals and stereoelectronic effects), mechanism (incl. reactive intermediates), experimental physical organic chemistry, named reactions, and synthetic planning. There's great coverage of metal catalyzed and enantioselective reactions included as part of the sections on organic reactions. In short, this book contains some (although by no means complete) information on every topic a graduate student in organic chemistry should be familiar with. Thus, it provides a bird's eye view of chemistry knowledge for either a mechanistic or synthetic organic chemistry course for first year graduate students, as well as a resource for students preparing for qualifying or cumulative exams. There are an excellent collection of in-chapter and end-of-chapter exercises, with associated primary literature references (over 2000 of them). I will strongly consider making this a required textbook for my physical organic chemistry course next year.Of course, Anslyn and Dougherty or Lowry and Richardson presents a more complete picture of physical organic chemistry, and the textbooks by Warren do a more thorough job teaching synthesis. However, this is the best all-around text for graduate students I've seen (perhaps a better textbook could be produced if D. A. Evans converts his lecture notes into an actual book...). In fact, one can consider this to be a graduate level sequel of Clayden et al.'s undergraduate textbook. The writing is clear enough that any student with a standard sophomore two-semester organic chemistry background will be able to use it fruitfully. It is great for students who are considering grad school, providing an accurate picture of how much knowledge they need to acquire in the first one or two years in a PhD program. At 1100 pages, the author manages to pack a lot into a relatively condensed book.Minor quibbles: Equations are poorly typeset. Important derivations are often given in massive footnotes. ChemDraw figures are not uniform in size and sometimes a bit carelessly rendered.
