The crew included Ronald McNair, who had already been the second African-American in space, and Ellison Onizuka, who had already been the first Asian-American astronaut in space. But the highlight of the mission was to be the “NASA Teacher in Space Project,” in which a civilian teacher would give teaching lessons to his or her class while onboard the space shuttle. The winner of the competition was Christa McAuliffe, a high school teacher in Concord, New Hampshire, who wrote a winning essay and had to undergo a year of astronaut training before that fateful day. It was a beautiful morning, and many spectators came to the Kennedy Space Center to watch the launch, including McAuliffe’s parents and her students. Several news networks were carrying live broadcasts of the launch, including live shots of McAuliffe’s parents as they watched the Challenger liftoff. Mission Control’s transmissions to the Challenger were being blared over loudspeakers to give spectators a play-by-play of the shuttle’s ascent. Ascent seemed to be going normally during the first minute, but about 75 seconds into the ascent, a plastic O-ring used to seal a joint in one of the solid rocket boosters failed, causing a breach of hot gas. When the spectators saw the explosion, many of them started cheering, unaware of what was really happening. But Mission Control quickly announced that there had been some sort of problem, and the crowd became confused and then panicky as the space shuttle, fuel tank and rocket boosters all broke apart and flew in opposite directions. Some cameras fixed on the falling debris as it fell to the ocean, while others stayed focused on McAuliffe’s parents. The entire crew was killed in the explosion, and investigations concluded that they may have survived until crashing into the ocean. After the Challenger disaster, the space shuttles were grounded for about two years, and a commission issued findings that would be used in an effort to prevent similar tragedies. I have no idea why so many reviewers are tagging this as fiction. This is not fiction folks this is true and hard facts, the witch trials happened and it was a very horrible time in our history, hopefully never to be repeated. With that being said I must admit, knowing that this a true event that actually happened to these actual people that lived...........it was rough and brought out many emotions from my home-schooled daughter. I never hide the truth from her though so history, as bloody and disturbing as it sometimes is, must be explored so as to not repeat. This book has brought on more research and in depth conversations on the topic then would have been possible if I had just presented to her a timeline of glossed over facts as is so often done. All in all, though rough, I would say this does a very good job of chronicling a very tragic period in our country's early history.

I actually bought this as one of many books to research the Salem Witch Trials for my latest novel. It states it's written for kids, but I find the writing not only intelligent but great for adults. It's a wonderful book with fun pictures.

What a great book for kids! Age appropriate, but well written and smart! A great addition to any child's library. A rare treat--a serious discussion of a historical tragedy, presented in an accurate, entertaining narrative. Books like this make learning fun, and keep kids reading. I highly suggest it, and Ms. Schanzer's other works as well. She does US history like no other!

fun read. don’t have a lot to say but i enjoyed it

Three years ago, I borrowed this book from my local library. I was engrossed by this short account of the Salem witch trials. I was also impressed by Schanzer's art.I received the copy of the book I purchased yesterday; I'm happy to report that the illustrations are even more impressive than I had remembered.

I use this to complement Arthur Miller's the Crucible in my drama lit. class. The kids love the pictures and the real-life context of what they're reading without it being all text. The illustrations really are clever and the text is presented in an interesting way too!

"Samuel Birley Rowbotham, under the pseudonym 'Parallax', lectured for two decades up and down Britain promoting his unique flat earth theory. This book, in which he lays out his world system, went through three editions, starting with a 16 page pamphlet published in 1849 and a second edition of 221 pages published in 1865. The third edition of 1881 (which had inflated to 430 pages) was used as the basis of this etext.

Rowbotham was an accomplished debater who reputedly steamrollered all opponents, and his followers, who included many well-educated people, were equally tenacious. One of them, John Hampden, got involved in a bet with the famous naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace about the flat earth. An experiment which Hampden proposed didn't resolve the issue, and the two ended up in court in 1876. The judge ruled against Hampton, who started a long campaign of legal harassment of Wallace. Rowbotham hints at the incident in this book.

Rowbotham believed that the earth is flat. The contients float on an infinite ocean which somehow has a layer of fire underneath it. The lands we know are surrounded by an infinite wilderness of ice and snow, beyond the Antarctic ocean, bordered by an immense circular ice-cliff. What we call the North Pole is in the center of the earth.

The polar projection of the flat earth creates obvious discrepancies with known geography, particularly the farther south you go. Figure 54 inadvertantly illustrates this problem. The Zetetic map has a severly squashed South America and Africa, and Australia and New Zealand in the middle of the Pacific. I think that by the 19th century people would have noticed if Australia and Africa were thousands of miles further apart than expected, let alone if Africa was wider than it was long!

The Zetetic Sun, moon, planets and stars are all only a few hundred miles above the surface of the earth. The sun orbits the north pole once a day at a constant altitude. The moon is both self-illuminated and semi-transparent. Eclipses can be explained by some unknown object occulting the sun or moon. Zetetic cosmology is 'faith-based', based, that is, on a literal interpretation of selected Biblical quotes. Hell is exactly as advertised, directly below us. Heaven is not a state of mind, it is a real place, somewhere above us. He uses Ussherian Biblical chronology to mock the concept that stars could be millions of light years away. He attacks the concept of a plurality of worlds because no other world than this one is mentioned in the Bible.

Rowbotham never adequately explains his alternative astronomy. If the Copernican theory so adequately explains planetary motions, why discard it, and what would he use in its place? What is the sun orbiting around once a day and how does it work like a spotlight, not a 'point source'? If the moon is self-luminous, what creates its phases? If gravity appears to work here on earth, why doesn't it apply to the celestial objects just a few hundred miles up?

To make his system work he had to throw out a great deal of science, including the scientific method itself, using instead what he calls a 'Zetetic' method. As far as I can see this is simply a license to employ circular reasoning (e.g., the earth is flat, hence we can see distant lighthouses, hence the earth is flat).

Zetetic Astronomy is a key work of flat-earth thought, just as Donnelly's Atlantis, the Antediluvian World is still considered required reading on the subject of Atlantis. If you ever have to debate the flat earth pro or con, this book is a complete agenda of each point that you'll have to argue."
