Dr. Joe Vethanayagam lives with his family in Maryland. He has studied in Asia, Europe, and North America. Cheryl Louise Gillespie, blind from early childhood, was born in Perth Andover, New Brunswick Canada. Her family lived in Grand Falls and Woodstock before settling in Fredericton NB. Tigger and Jasper’s New Home is a story of true events experienced by the author and her two cats. Cheryl wrote this book with the hope of introducing a blind character to young children in a humourous and gentle manner. After graduating from Fredericton High School, Cheryl studied through the Royal Conservatory of Music and attained First Class Honours in piano, as well as in music theory and history. Private singing lessons have also been an important part of her music training. In 1993, she was the recipient of the Stanley B. Cassidy Memorial Award, presented by The Fredericton Music Society, for her dedication to excellence and personal achievements. As a member of the Fredericton Music Teachers’ Association, Cheryl continues to teach piano lessons which has been her passionate devotion since 1986.

About the Author

James Alan Fox, the Lipman Family Professor of Criminology, Law, and Public Policy at Northeastern University, has written 18 books, including Violence and Security on Campus: From Preschool through College. He has published dozens of journal and magazine articles, as well as hundreds of freelance columns in newspapers around the country in the areas of multiple murder, youth crime, school and campus violence, workplace violence, and capital punishment. He is a member of the USA Today Board of Contributors and writes the “Crime and Punishment” blog for The Boston Globe. In addition to giving keynote talks and testimony before Congress and in court, Fox has worked on criminal investigations surrounding serial and mass murder cases. He was awarded the 2007 Hugo Adam Bedau Award for excellence in capital punishment by the Massachusetts Committee against the Death Penalty and the 2008 Klein Lectureship by Northeastern University.

Jack Levin is the Brudnick Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Criminology at Northeastern University, where he co-directs its Center on Violence and Conflict and teaches the sociology of violence and hate. He has authored or co-authored 31 books, including Serial Killers and Sadistic Murderers―Up Close and Personal and The Violence of Hate. He has published more than 100 articles in professional journals and books and more than 150 columns in major newspapers, such as The New York Times, The Sunday London Times, The Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post, and USA Today. In 2013, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Crime and Delinquency from the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP). Levin has spoken to a wide variety of community, academic, and professional groups, including the White House Conference on Hate Crimes, the National Organization of Hostage Negotiators, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

About the Author
Dr. Kenzo Kase was born in Japan in the early 1940s. He was a sickly child, not allowed to attend physical education classes because of this physical frailty. Part of his genius is his ability to make connections between different treatment paradigms and to help each concept progress a step or two further. Today people call it Integrative Medicine, but Dr. Kase has been using this approach for years. He has seen that there is no one-size-fits all. In essence, integrative medicine is the embodiment of alternative and evidence based medicine; a school of thought that does not distinguish between the two. Instead it focuses on wellness, health, and prevention through education and an emphasis on the patient-physician relationship; as well as the treatment of the patient s mental, emotional, and physical ailments as a whole. In a book as informative as it is entertaining, Bering (Why Is the Penis Shaped Like That?) argues for the efficacy of science and logic over irrational morals when addressing sexual deviancy. Citing numerous studies and historical sources, Bering makes the claim that, deep down, we are all sexual deviants in one form or another—and that sexual deviancy is, in fact, not deviant at all. From the beginning of human history, people have engaged in antiheteronormative behaviors, from bestiality to pedophilia. Furthermore, Bering shows how most sexual deviancy isn't a choice, but rather is the result of a genetic predisposition over which the individual has no control. Laws and medical diagnoses controlling sexual activity should investigate whether the activities in question cause harm (though harm itself is subjective, and is therefore also a problematic way to assess behavior), rather than whether society is merely grossed out by them. This is clearly a personal topic for Bering, who is gay and, in fact, discusses his experiences of self-loathing and discrimination.
