About the Author
Andrew Karmen has been a professor in the Sociology Department at John Jay College of Criminal Justice since 1978. He has taught courses on a wide range of subjects including general sociology, criminal justice, criminology, crime and justice in New York City, drug abuse, delinquency, social problems, race relations, research methods, statistics, and victimology. He has previously served as the coordinator of both the criminology and criminal justice undergraduate majors, the co-director of the master's program in criminal justice, and as a member of the doctoral faculty. Dr. Karmen has written journal articles and chapters in books on a number of subjects, including drug abuse, police use of deadly force, auto theft, providing defense attorneys to indigents, victims' rights, the victimization of women, and predictions about the plight of crime victims in the future. His investigation of why crime rates rise and fall, NEW YORK MURDER MYSTERY: THE TRUE STORY BEHIND THE CRIME CRASH OF THE 1990s, (NYU Press, paperback edition 2006) unearths statistical evidence that casts doubt on most of the widely held beliefs about the reasons for the dramatic improvement in public safety in New York City. In 2012, Dr. Karmen was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the World Society Of Victimology.

The rest of the book is about Nat's relationship with Shakespeare and the other actors, as well as the differing interpretations of the plays that he's in.I liked that we're told right away that Nat's in a coma rather than having it revealed at the end of the book that it's a dream or hallucination. Also, the discussions of how different time periods and directors see the plays in various ways was a sophisticated concept for a kid's book; it's nice when the author assumes some intelligence on the part of the reader! The story is interesting on many levels -- we learn a lot about England of the time, but within the context of interesting events and happenings -- drama without violence.Highly recommended.

I have a soft spot for time-travel books and have read a fair few. This one will go right to my "very special" shelf of YA books, alongside "The Dark is Rising" (which is actually better than this, but it's better than just about anything!). I read a borrowed copy in one gulp, and now I'm ordering my own.Looking through the reader reviews, I didn't notice anyone linking this to the "Dark is Rising" series, but did anyone else notice that we have a character in here who has been living for a very long time, making things happen for Good?

I really liked this book! I am an actor myself and it in intrigued me the love of the art that was shared with me! I learned to love the characters including William Shakespeare and Thomas. I loved how I felt to really be there! I also like the connections that Nat had when he woke up to how he was 400 years ago, like how gross is hair was because he did not wash it back than and how it could have seemed liked part of the dream because nurses did not clean it! I have recently gone to England and went on the London tower and everything! I felt I was there again when reading. I did not give it five stars because it had some slow parts. Although I think it is a great read and I recommend it to others!

The book is good for stimulating the background knowledge of Shakespeare for young or reluctant readers.

A teenaged boy finds himself transported from modern London to the Elizabethan era where he finds himself part of Shakespeare's acting company. Great story and an excellent picture of London at that time. Written for older children this mature adult enjoyed it.

Great audio book for ages 7 - adult. Good introduction to Shakespeare's time. Jim Dale does his usual superb job at narrating. Only wish it would come in CD.

There were many twist to it that I loved. It showed the true side of the character in the end

If used as designed, your children will learn and understand the literary concepts essential for doing well on standardized tests such as the SAT Literature Subject Test and the ACT Reading Test. Even more important, Tolman Hall Literature Studies will open your students’ eyes to ideas, concepts, and deeper meanings that they may previously have skimmed over in cursory literature studies and in their reading for pleasure. Each Unit Study provides background information about the author, several possible unit study schedules, a plot overview, and individual lessons. The lessons each contain a reading assignment, a summary and analysis of the assignment, a vocabulary lesson, a reading quiz, and short essay questions. Depending on your needs and schedule, you can customize the lessons to fit your students’ needs. As the teacher, you can read along with your students, or if you’re short on time, you can keep up by simply reading the summaries and analyses of each lesson, which give enough information for you to discuss the assignment with your student. Many homeschooling parents teach more than one student at a time, and with Tolman Hall Unit Studies, you can teach the same work of literature at several grade levels. For instance, you could assign the same reading to students in grades 7 and 9 but assign the 9th grader more difficult writing assignments and more mature end-of-unit projects. In this way, your whole family can discuss the same books and authors while still meeting grade-appropriate requirements. Written by Athabaskan Velma Wallis, Two Old Women illuminates a legend passed down through generations of people living off the land in Fort Yukon, a remote community in northwest Alaska. The author was raised in a family that adhered to traditional Athabaskan values, and these values are deeply ingrained in the story. It's a fairly quick and easy read, but the themes, characters, and cultural heritage will give you plenty to talk about.
