Here's the truth: I really LOVE this bible study. I feel like Barb Raveling is REALLY on to something here, and by focusing my eyes on the Lord and my spiritual battles, I'm able to overcome my battles with food/eating.HOWEVER, I'm very disappointed that I feel like (the first time reading through this bible study) I'm really missing out by not having ALL of the necessary resources in this ONE book. I would need to buy at least TWO MORE books to really get the full experience:1. The Renewing of Mind Project by Barb Raveling2. I Deserve a Doughnut by Barb RavelingI just wish I would have known upfront that I needed to purchase two other books inorder to have a successful experience with this one. If this was a money-making scheme, then I wish the publishers would have just combined all three books into one and just charged $20 more dollars for the whole set!
This book is like a deeper dive into Lisa Turkhusrt's made to crave, and a systematic way to renew your mind along the lines of "love to eat hate to eat". Barb does a great job of applying scriptural truth to the Christian's weight loss struggles, including emotional eating, our rebellion against boundaries, gluttony and idolatry. If you have ever found yourself eating more than you need in a day, while telling yourself "I'll start tomorrow" you need this book. If you find yourself going to food for comfort because it is so much easier and more immediate than learning how to deepen your relationship with Jesus Christ, you need this book. If you need help figuring out why you keep sabotaging your efforts to have a lean and healthy body, you need this book.This book is not a quick fix. It is more like a training manual that you will want to use over and over and over again until you are finally free. If you have a lifetime of habits to break free from, do not despair. God can set you free, and Barb can help you on your journey. I also highly recommend her podcast, "Christian Habits."I bought the Kindle version of the book, and use copy and paste to put each day's study in my Evernote journal so that I can answer the questions on my phone wherever I am.
Used this book to get control of my eating habits with the emphasis on creating a healthy dwelling place for the Holy Spirit as well as a stronger, more energetic life style, Just the jump start I needed, great biblical principles to apply to my everyday life to keep me on track. Bought the second book as a gift for a 19 yr. old young lady who is also seeking to change her body and lifestyle, she was excited about what she saw in the book .I am 35lbs lighter and so much more healthy. not stopping here, this is a lifestyle changer.
I have gone through this bible study four times and God keeps working to free me from the stronghold of too much food. I have found if you include Barbs question as part of your answer it is very helpful. For example day one Gods role in the transforming prowess is______ and my role in the transforming process is_______ I have also found that if you write the scriptures out God's word gets planted in your mind. Boundaries are like a safety net. When you break your boundaries they are indicators that you are believing a lie. This bible study helps you to rewallpaper your mind with truth. It's a great tool that God uses to set you free from the bondage of food.
This is a wonderful 30-day study which enabled me to really delve into APPLYING God's Word to the besetting sin issue of my life - obsession with weight, food, dieting, etc. I have struggled with idolatry of thinness, binge eating/restrictive eating, over-exercising vs. being lazy, since I was 14 years old (I am almost 33 now). I've gained and lost the same 15-25 pounds countless times. This study helped me to identify that, though I've prayed about this some, I hadn't truly surrendered myself to the Lord in this area. The hard truth I was confronted with was, I'm prideful and want to do things the way I think is best. This study has been invaluable thus far in leading me to the only One who can truly free me from this bondage I've created for myself. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone that is ready to admit to the Lord, "I cannot do this; You must!"
Barb Raveling takes the principle found in Romans 12:2...that of being transformed by the renewing of our minds...and makes it practical and doable. This bible study can be completed in 20-40 minutes each day and of all the bible studies I have ever done (and there have been many) I feel like it is the most effective--the most results "bang" for your time investment "buck!" If you work carefully through this study and invite God to change you, even as you cooperate with him, you won't be disappointed. I am very picky about the "weight loss" bible studies and devotionals that I use, let alone endorse, because of being heavily involved in the Thin Within ministry, but I endorse this material HEARTILY and recommend it for anyone who has any sort of desire or need for boundaries with their eating--even non-dieting, intuitive, mindful eating sorts. Barb has done a great job of (typically) avoiding dieting jargon that will trigger those of us with challenging dieting pasts, even while being "dieter friendly." How she does that so artfully, only the Holy Spirit knows. :-) Whether you are involved in a true blue diet or have broken free from counting anything ever again and just want to embrace eating according to physical hunger and satisfaction, Barb's material is a "must have!" You won't regret the investment of your time and money!
This is not just a diet book it a book about seeing the truth though faulty thinking.This may be the first "diet" book I've ever read that actually makes a difference.
Excellent! Life changing. I've done other christian weight loss diets and books yet nothing ever really went this deep. This book (among with her other book " I deserve a donut") really helped me fix the root of the problem. My thoughts. Renewing my mind in Christ through scripture and sticking to my boundaries. Freedom! Down 7 lbs.
